Alcamo Sicily is a small Sicilian town halfway between Palermo and Trapani. It's an excellent place to stop, or you can enjoy the town's authentic Sicilian atmosphere longer.
With 45,000 inhabitants, Alcamo is the fourth-largest town in the province of Trapani. Regarding population density, it is second only to the small hill town of Erice. (For more about Trapani and Erice, see my page on Western Sicily.)
Alcamo's attractions are its old town, Centro Storico, and Alcamo Marina. In the old town, you'll find restaurants and bars; in the Marina, you'll have several kilometers long sandy beach.
The historic center dates back to the Middle Ages. There, cobbled streets, many churches, and historic monuments bear witness to the city's colorful past.
Immerse yourself in the local culture by sampling the local cuisine. Many traditional trattorias offer this opportunity. Or enjoy the world-famous Alcamo wine at a local winery.
The roots of Alcamo go deep into antiquity. The city's strategic location has made it the object of many conquests. This is reflected in its multicultural architecture, traditions, and cuisine today.

In the historic center of Alcamo, you will find many churches. Each of them has its own story to tell. The main church is The Basilica of Our Lady of Assumption. It was built in the 1300s. The church's red marble columns come from nearby Mount Bonifato.
The church is also home to works by the Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans. They can also be found in the local churches of Saints Cosmas and Damian and the Basilica of Saint Maria Assunta.
As mentioned, the town's main attractions are its old town, churches and castle. The cobbled streets of the historic center are also home to many restaurants and bars.

However, if your wine-tasting preferences are more than the occasional glass, you can book a guided tour of one of the local wineries. There, you will be introduced to the secrets of wine-making and tasting.
Lovers of the delicacies, on the other hand, can look for a bakery or café in the city center. The most famous of these sweet things are cannoli. These are crispy tubes filled with sweet ricotta paste.
Or try the cassata. This is also based on sweet ricotta with caramelized fruit fillings.
And, of course, remember gelato, a creamy Sicilian ice cream that comes in various flavors.
Alcamo is located in the middle of rolling hills. There are also vineyards and olive groves nearby. The surrounding area offers many opportunities for exploring nature.

The most notable of the religious festivals is the celebration of Maria Santissima dei Miracoli from July 19 to 21. This is when the town celebrates its patron saint. Cultural and religious activities accompany the event. There are also horse races.
Alcamo is known for its wines. On this basis, wine festivals have been organized in the town. Now, in 2024, this wine festival will be held in conjunction with the city of Modica, which is known for its chocolate.
The festival is called Ciokowine Fest in Alcamo. It will serve the world-famous Modica chocolate and the equally famous Alcamo wines. The festival takes place in April. Only time will tell if it will become a longer tradition.
